Male Mute swan Displaying (wing feathers raised up

I managed to get these photos of the wonderful Mute Swan family thanks to such a spectacular 'coincidence' that it makes me smile just thinking about it. My husband and I were driving from the parade that our theater group walked in and heading to the theater that we were doing a show at that night and as we were crossing a bridge that crossed a pond, and I just happened to look over at just the right time to see the Mute swan family paddling around. My husband drove up to the next parking lot, and we went back- when I got to the bridge (thankfully there was a nice wide sidewalk) they were so far back in the pond that I was afraid the photos were not going to come out worth anything... I ended up sending up a silent request that they come closer. Next thing I know, they are all heading straight for me. They ended up bringing their babies literally right up to the bridge (bridge was only about 4 feet above the water, and they brought the babies to about 2 feet out from the bridge pylons) They were so close for most of the time that I stayed there that I had to un-zoom my camera lens as much as possible in order to get them in the photos.

neat shot; the mute swan family we have here don't seem to mind humans being near but will hiss at the approach of any dogs

Artist Reply: These particular parents literally swam directly to me (I would say straight at me, but like they always do in order to make sure the path is safe, they swim in the same kind of S- sliver/curving path so that they could see any dangers.). Anyways, These parents brought the 'toddlers' (babies is really understating their maturity. They are at right about the age where human children start pushing away from the parents to see how much they can do that without being in danger. And once they got close enough the parents both cocked their heads to the side, looked me up from head to toe and decided that i was "just a weird looking swan" and gave me the job of cygnet/swanling-sitting while the parents went about cleaning themselves, eating, drinking, etc. leaving the babies right up within a couple/few feet of me, while I took all sorts of photos.

THIS IS A GOOD ONE AMY... THE PARENTS ARE VERY PROTECTIVE OF THEIR LITTLE ONES..JOANIE

Artist Reply: actually in this photo they are being very trusting of me, because when they are feeling like they have to really protect the babies the mother is in front, with the babies no more than two feet away and the father trailing quite a ways behind so he can scan for trouble. This photo was taken right about the time that they started to think of me as a "strange looking swan" and a "swanling sitter". They started eating, drinking, and grooming themselves all while having me "babysit".
