10 x 36 canvas. new work. Although it is hardly the focal point or reason you are probably looking at this painting, I like to explore and share what is often outside of the obvious. I find the simple purity and relationship in the natural form and function of the barren skeleton of a tree and the bristling energy in lightning to be as compelling as any aspect of the natural world. To me, it is usually in the obscure notions where nature proves to be more unusual than fiction. I see the barren form of almost any tree species replicated in the varieties of lightning. Like the branches and twigs of a tree that are stretched out to seek out life giving light, Lightning... multi-juxtaposed, is inverted and a negative image of branches and twigs of pure light, seeming to reach out from the dark, likely terminating any life it touches. Ironically, the "tree" is widely seen as a symbol of "life" while "lightning", is usually seen as a symbol more akin to the good old "skull and cross bones". Also, they are both important if not essential to sustaining life on this planet. I often refer to images of lightning to help me form the image of trees reflected on the water in my paintings. Furtermore... submerged in water, Koi are actually protected and have almost no reason to fear lightning. No irony intended. This painting is sold.
