Ishtar Gate

The Ishtar Gate- was considered one of the original 7 wonders of the World; it was constructed around 575 BCE by order of King Nebuchadnezzar II on the north side of the city of Babylon; it's actually one of 8 gateways built. The Gate was constructed of blue glazed tiles with alternating rows of bas-relief dragons & aurochs(an extinct species of oxen). Through the gateway ran the Processional Way which was lined with walls covered in lions on glazed bricks. This wonderful piece of ingenuity was standing til the 6th century AD when it was replaced with the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Can you imagine what it must have felt like to stand at the doorway to this magnificent city? I would think it'd have been incredibly awe-inspiring & now you can bring a little bit of this home with this beautifully created Ishtar Gate painting.
