Somthing different from my usual aircraft paintings . . . a portrait of fear triumph and patrotism a young Kamikazi pilot on the brink of his final sacrifice. The philosophy of the kamikaze is a difficult one for western minds to understand.These self- sacrificing attacks offerered pilots the chance to inflict losses on the enemy and to die bravely and in the purest style of ancient Japanese tradition.

There is something ferocious about this portrait. It also has the blank stare of a fanatic which recalls our current suicide bombers. It is poignant without being all that admirable. Perhaps a view of the pray ceremony prior to the flight might evoke more sympathy.sher richardson 21 Sep 2004
