Anne Of Cleves (version two)

4 x 6 inches, watercolor and gouache, December 2007 A portrait of Anne of Cleves, the third wife of Henry VIII. It is based on the Holbein portrait of her that Henry saw first and made his decision to marry her on. He was very disappointed when he finally met her in the flesh, naming her "Flander's mare" and claiming she smelt. Though the marriage went ahead it was annulled six months later, with the agreement of Anne. She was given land and property and a pension and survived Henry and all his other wives. She never married again.
