The plant's common name refers to the curiously curved spikes of white flowers that appear in mid-to late summer. The botanical name of the plant is Lysimachia clethroides. The origin of the name is from the Greek meaning "ending strife". Named after King Lysimachos of Thrace (360-281 B. C.) who is said to have calmed a bull with a piece of loosestrife. *** The photo was taken on August 15, 2009 at Clare College Fellows Garden, Cambridge, United Kingdom.
