Painted in 2002. Desplayed in several one-person shows in the Netherlands and on internet sites. Realistic view of mountains, rocky peaks, monastery atop square-carved rock pedestal, greens, grass.
This looks like a very interesting location. Is it Meteora in Greece? You've painted the rocks very realistically. I like the colours.
Artist Reply: Thank you Peter, and for your question. I will confess a little secret to you here and ask that you not tell anybody else. I assume that view is in Greece. I have never been to Greece but long have longed to go there. The painting was inspired by (and this is the secret part!) an advertisement for an alcoholic beverage. There was no caption for the location at all. At the time I had just begun painting, and I set out to copy the photo. But having grown up for years in Oregon and awefully hiking in its mountains, I could not help but keep drifting into memories reaching as far back as 50 years! And so, the background mounts intruded themselves. This also was my first painting with palette knife, and for the last 6 years I have used brushes only for fine details and touch-ups -- when I chose to do them! (That's a secret, too!)
Meanwhile, if you've happened to read this far, you have more than earned than this humble apology:

Artist Reply: Hi again Maria! Now here is a pertinent example of my Klutziness! Either I inadvertantly clicked the SUBMIT box before I had finished my reply and a fragment will appear or something else happened and it is gone forever! And before I had a chance to thank you enough for the kind comment you left here! So, Thank You, Maria. I haven't had a chance to visit your site yet, but I am looking forward to doing so soon. And also -- I guess this part should go to Anneke -- because I put your name in one spot in my comment to her. I guess I must have just looked up and seen your name and typed it! All best wishes, Bruce
I have seen this painting so many times and every time these great rocks impress me so much! Like they're guarding the monastery.
