This dramatically theatrical painting idealizes the death of Ludovica, with the pain, suffering and yet heavenly happiness present in her pose and expression, is inspired by a sculpture of Gianlorenzo Bernini, commissioned by Cardinal Albertoni and currently situated above the Altieri Chapel alter where she is buried. Ludovica died in 1533 and was beatified in 1671.
