Grieving Woman of the Costa da Morte©

Here's my version and interpretation of the "Grieving Woman of the Costa da Morte" (Spain)
another one in Armando Salas’ challenge (Spanish cartoonist)

The grieving woman I 'borrowed' from Pablo Picasso's "Blue Nude". I think he would not mind.

"Women on shore, looking at the horizon, comes in mind, " Armando said.
This fisher's wife is surrounded by water/sea, which is her life, her living.
These women are always worried, always grieving because their men -fathers, sons, brothers, husbands- have their jobs in one of the most dangerous places. The sea took her love from her.
The nudity of this woman underscores her grief and suffering even greater.

The netting of the fishers you'll find throughout my painting, as well as many fisher's boats.
On the right of the nude, there's a compass.
There are also several sun rays filled with musical notes, which portrays that there's always a silver lining in life.

A passionated COLLAGE/OIL painting on (gesso-ed) watercolor paper

For all details please check Armando's thread and the art of the "Peixeiras" Artist Group

I wish I had been clever enough when I was a seaman to bring a compass with me when I went ashore. You would need a computer compass to be able to find your way around some of the women I have met in my travails aroundtheir fishing nets. But to return to the painting, it seems that when you borrowed from Picasso he speared you with his style and no bad thing because whatever style you use you are the very best. Beautiful painting Olga when could I say else?

Annette Labedzki 30 Jul 2008

Tammy Heywood 30 Jul 2008

What a very moving and heart wrenching story. But you are right in that women whose men's life is at sea are always grieving...one for the sea is the mistress she cannot compete with and two, they have balances that must be met by the sea and sometimes there are losses of lives. Very tragic, but a lovely painting.

Sharon Gonzalez 30 Jul 2008

Wonderful technique and in your hands you are able to impart such vibrancy with any subject. Even though it is a somber theme, it still shows through and through your spirit. Well done Olga!

Armando Salas 30 Jul 2008

Tremendous rendering, your "Grieving woman", Olga. Those brave women, souls made of steel, but loving wives and mothers. Always worried, always grieving women because their men -fathers, sons, brothers, husbands- have their job in most dangerous place. Now I remember something José Fortunato wrote about to draw a fado singer. "Fado" (Portuguese) means "Destiny" if I'm not wrong. Women of Costa da Morte accept "fado", "destiny"... this is why they are admirable people. Unluckily from time to time I see at tv the news about a boat lost in a storm. Still in my mind the picture: women on shore, looking at horizon...
