Behind the Tree

I like beings peering out behind things. I like knubbly bark. I still, still, STILL need to work on shadows and contrast. But I am pleased with the color intensity (with fewer layers!) in this. I'm getting there... slowly...

Original is 4" x 4" on Arches hot press, Winsor & Newton (mostly) watercolors).

Feedback and ways to improve deeply needed, always!

Nice Work. Looks dry for watercolor. I like the way the page is filled.

Artist Reply: Thanks for the comment, Mari! I can think of a couple reasons it might look dry: I might've been painting with too little paint so it's not intense enough (very likely); it's on pretty smooth paper; it might not have enough contrast (very likely for me; I think I'm scared of shadows ... or of making them the wrong color. I keep telling myself "It's only paper!" but I'm still terribly shy about laying down the paint). If you have either additional explanations or ways to change this, I'd love to hear them!
