©Delores J. Knowles 2008 -- Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea) This smallish heron is the only one of the heron species in which there is a dramatic difference in coloration of the first-year and the adult birds: first-year birds are pure white. The body of the adult is dark slate blue and the head and neck are a dark purplish or maroon. The bill varies from blue to gray with a black tip. The adult averages about two feet in height. This little heron is found all along the eastern coast of the United States and is also found in abundance in South America. It eats more insects that the larger herons who prefer seafood. Unlike the egrets, it has no fancy plumes and so was spared by the plume hunters. Photographed on Sanibel Island, Florida.

How Splendid! I begin to understand that the creme of the creme of artists comment on each others work here. I do not only love Birds, I adore them. What wonderful animals birds are. My Bird collection went down the drain with my winchester hard drive. I had images of the Hawaiian Hawk and the Hawaiian Owl. Oh well, after the 30th time watching 'The Secret' nothing shall ever cloud my mind! There are more Hawks and Owls around. I will take a picture of one and dedicate it to You! I feel very blessed to be commented on by You!merle cruser 24 Jan 2008

Hi Delores, FL is such an interesting area to study birds. I have lived in Orlando ( I did the Harley Davidson school there in the late 90's) , and Cocoa beach then in Naples. so I miss the reptile and bird life there. This photograph is a great study in color and subject. Additionally it is beyond what I would consider professional quality. I love it! We have a few wading birds here in East Tennessee and some reintroduced species such as a heron of some type and both the brown and bald eagles. Thanks for sharing your wonderful photographs!Edward Bajgerowicz 23 Jan 2008
I love the blue color of him. Nature always has the best colors.David Holcombe 23 Jan 2008
Nice solitary bird. We have lots of the larger gray herons, as well as white ones. In fact, Louisiana is full of interesting birds. It takes a lot of patience to capture just the right shot.Teresa Trant 23 Jan 2008
