Sandhill Crane at Eight Months

©Delores J. Knowles 2008 -- The Sandhill Cranes (Grus Canadensis), standing about four feet in height, are one of the more numerous large wading birds in Florida. They can also be found in several western and southern states and as far north as the remote Arctic. A mated pair of Sandhills makes their home in and around the pond in back of our house. This is the chick that was hatched this past spring. The photo is taken at age eight months. Photographed in Lake County, Florida.

This is the bird my son was named for. A pair of them were always near a spot my husband drives by on the way to work, and one time they walked right up to his window while he was waiting for them to cross the road :)

Artist Reply: Thanks for the kind comments on my Sandhill Crane and Egret images. When I saw a reference on one of your images about a son named Crane, I wondered about it then. A lovely story.

very nice shot! The cranes are in summertime here in front of our home at a big pond surrounded by forests, nice sounds always, hearing them!
