I am trying to do a different painting of Chief Joseph as part of my portraiture lessons. Can I ask you what colours you used for Joseph's skin in this painting?
Any advice would be greatly received.
Artist Reply: My basic fleshtones are mixed using titanium white and then adding a red such as cadmium red (light), a yellow such as yellow ochre or cadmium yellow, and a bit of burnt sienna. To make dark tones, I'll add burnt sienna, burnt umber and ultramarine blue to the red. You can experiment on your palette to get the variations in between. When the basics are painted and dry, I like to go back and drybrush little bits of strong color into the shadows, such as blues, greens, or violet and warm up the lighter tones with a hint of red. I apply the paint sparingly to the stiff bristle brush and lightly drag it. Sometimes, I'll also make little glazes of tint and wash it over in the light areas.
Oh this is wonderful!!! This has all the hallmarks of your superior drawing skills. I love the Native American paintings you do. They're fascinating people! Congratulations on an amazing work of art!
