Hawaiian Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a day to enjoy our family and friends. Some memories are so special that they never fade, but enrich us for a lifetime. Although, I never identified myself as a photographer, I loved to chronicle my family’s events on film and video at home and when we traveled. One Thanksgiving, I thought it would be an adventure to experience Thanksgiving on the Island of Maui at the Grand Wailea Spa and Resort in Hawaii. It was a magical time for all of us. My son Kevie was especially excited because Charlie and I booked two rooms, one for us and another private paradise for Kevie and his best friend Max. What is amazing is the two boys were eleven years old in the 7th grade at a progressive middle school, Crossroads where they remained close friends after graduation from the 12th grade. They continued on a parallel track to New York City where Max and Kevie will be having Thanksgiving together today with an invitation list for 18 people. These fortunate young men have that rare friendship that can endure for a lifetime, the kind of unusual communion where they speak their own language and feel the deep kinship of brothers. Kevie graduated from the French Culinary Institute in New York City after pursuing his passion to be a Chef since his father opened a restaurant and catering business when he was two years old. My first experience watching Kevie prepare Thanksgiving was preparing to take a bath and finding the turkey in ice basting in brine in the bathtub. What an unusual bathing companion? Screams of a frantic chef shattered my eardrums as Kevie screamed, DON’T ENTER THE BATHTUB!! The turkey needs more time to marinate. I thought I had committed the crime of the century and was relieved since taking baths with iced turkeys did not seem very comforting. The meal was magnificent and I can only imagine now that Kevie is a Chef how elegant and delicious the meal he artistically prepares will be for his eighteen fortunate guests in NYC. This picture was taken at Kanapali Beach where Charlie, Max and Kevie are holding these colorful parrots. At first I thought the design on Kevie’s shirt was colorful until I realized he was holding a parrot with another on his shoulder. Another vividly colorful parrot was comfortably standing on Max head. Three were perched on Charlie, one on his hand, shoulder and head. I think the Parrot’s were delighted that it is not a tradition to eat these birds on Thanksgiving. I doubt that the Pilgrims had Parrots to thank for their hearty meals. It does not matter where you are when you share an unusual holiday with family, friends and Parrots. It is quite apparent that the fun of being together was the celebration. I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving and if you happen to step on an iced Turkey in your bathtub, you are one of the lucky ones.

Artist Reply: Thanks so much my friend. Let me know how things are going and where you are living now. I hoped I helped your question about your adorable kids. Also, having so many wacky toys, I want to send you an e-mail. I am interested to know what you think about some new and old characters I have for next season's "soap opera."
