The High One

Mount McKinley,Alaska. This is another of my favorite images. This was taken on Sept.10 2001 the day before 9/11. Most of the time is it fairly hard to photograph Mt.McKinley as it is so high (over 20,000 feet) that it creates it's own weather and is mostly covered over by clouds. During the summer months ,only about 35% of the time is it free of clouds obscuring it from view. I was fortunate enough in that this morning the clouds had parted for a couple of hours. I wanted to express the relationship with the other mountains in the foreground(yes those are mountains, shows how big Mt.McKinley really is). I also liked the colors and shading of the image. To get this shot I had to use a 500mm lens. When this mountain is out from behind the clouds it is unmistakable when you are viewing the horizon. This mountain really looms out to you .Before being named Mt.Mckinley it was known by the locals as Mt.Denali which translates to mean "the High One "in the Athabascan People language. Hope you enjoy the image. Gary
