This is one of many lanes in the cemetery. The entire cemetery reminds one of a small city. In fact, while on this visit, I noticed buildings upon one the hills, and thought it was a neighborhood in Paris, but it was instead another part of the cemetery. Pere Lachaise was established by Napoleon in 1804. All cemeteries were banned inside Paris in 1786, the year that the Cimetiere des Innocents on the fringe of Les Halles food market was closed, on the assumption that they presented a health hazard. It was this same assumption which led to the creation of the famous Parisian catacombs in the south of the city, one of the many sites we visited on this day. Several new cemeteries replaced all the Parisian ones outside the precincts of the capital. Montmartre Cemetery is located in the north, Pere Lachaise is located in the east, and Montparnasse Cemetery is located in the south. At the heart of the city, close to the Eiffel Tower, is Passy Cemetery. Image captured 09/23/2007.
