Imagine that you were so in love, how you looked was of no importance. The freedom and the joy you could feel, with the one you love, without the binds of fussing and pondering always about how you looked on the outside. Well, that is in part, how St. Rose of Lima felt about God. She was considered to be very beautiful by most everyone in her town in Lima Peru, back in the late 1500's, which made people see 'her looks', instead of seeing her heart. So, to push past this, she cut her hair, among other efforts, to remove the appearance of her beauty. Very devoted to God and the poor around her, she also was the founder of social work in Peru. She had great empathy for the Aztecs who were savagely overtaken by the Spanish as well. I captured her here-art nouveau style, cutting off her hair in her parent's vegetable garden where she often worked with them. Her hands are cut and sore from the intense about of labor and self sacrifice she made both for them, and all those around her. Since the people of Peru just had an earthquake this year, I knew St. Rose was an important person to capture as art. Dear Lord, please help the people of Peru! *professional art marker, ink and watercolor on Bristol Board (Copyright Natalie Ewert of Course!)
