Bill Withers

What an infectious smile this man had. Here's a quick one of Bill Withers. Younger generation probably remember him most, if at all from the song "Lean On Me." It was the title song for the movie of the same title, but written by Bill, long before it. He was a Songwriter, and performer. No, a great songwriter, and performer. He's no longer teathered to the earth, but his songs remain in many of our hearts, and minds. "Lovely Day," "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh, Makes Me Cry," etc.,etc., and my favorite "Who Is He, and What is He To You?" He's talking to his lady, and it's obvious there's a connection between she, and a man he saw staring him down, then when he hears her clear her throat and turns to look at her, she immediately looks down at the ground. Such a great "telling a story" song. You might not remember him or know him, but now you have an idea of what he accomplished. I'll do a better one of him sometime.

Artist Reply: Thank you, Francis! I think little blurbs about people from our cultural past, really helps us on occasion. I think I just like sharing the joyful side of days past, while learning about the present.

Magnificent pencil painting, Carliss. You are incredible with your pencil.

Artist Reply: Bert, I think I must have been in love with my pencils from an early age. I can't do a lot of diversely rendered work, but, I'm always wishing to learn about new ways to use the pencil! But, I hate only doing what's a bit eaier for me all of the time. My thanks goes out to you, and I appreciate your support!

Penny Myers 25 Jul 2007

Wow,you just keep popping them out. How long does it take you to do a portrait? This is so good and I love the style you use with your pencils.

Artist Reply: Making up for lost time, Penny! So much lost time. I think, though, if the internet had been around, I would not have lost so much. This portrait was done in 45 minutes. It needs cleaning up, I know, but I'm glad you think well of it. Thanks so much for commenting!!!
