Does it have talons or bird toes? It appears to have a short down turned beak. It could be a desert owl. If so, it eat mice and larger insects.

Artist Reply: thanks for the input, Stanley; good observation about the beak, don't know about the feet...can't tell; it was in a moderately wooded area and there has been much more rain than usual...will check out the owls
