In Jamaica and other island in the Caribbean, most women in the market place wear hats, sometimes wide brimmed hats to ward off the very intense, hot tropical sun. These hats are usually made of "straw",and the straw comes from cereal grasses, fibre grasses grown locally. This straw is used for weaving, plaiting, or braiding and perfect for a natural and perfect for making "straw" hats. These hats are natural colored hats,like the straw itsef. Some are decorated with flowers embroided with straw dyed in various colors, and some are completed dyed in red, or yellow as the wide brimmed yellow hat in this painting.
