Columbine Beauties

I was able to find some wild columbine flowers as well as several in gardens I passed while traveling in May. I found several varieties, including one that I believe was a new hybrid of the flower. I love the way the flower has such unusual shapes and beauty. I will be looking into growing my own when I get my garden planted next year in my new home in Colorado. I will definitely look into crossbreeding varieties and finding as many as I can to grow. I hope you like this painting I did of the summer sunset colored ones I found while passing a beautiful garden. I saw the original species the gardener started with, and the new variety they produced. As I do not know if they have registered the new variety yet, I will not give out the garden location or a photograph. I'd hate to spoil they're glory of announcing the breed. I will post later other varieties that I know that are available on the market or in the wild. I painted this using a digital drawing tablet, a Wacom and it's wireless stylus pen. It hooks to you computer and you hold it like a pen, brush, etc. You still have to do all the brushstrokes, so this is not a photo manipulation. It took hours of layering of paints, just doesn't require dry time or clean up. I can be more accurate with my skills because I can undo goofs, or rework areas. I save the work in stages so that I can rethink the work if I dislike what I did in an area. I used Corel Painter Canvas IX.5 to digitally paint this. I did not click a button to auto paint this. There are programs that can do it, but that takes all the challenge and fun out of it for me. Nor do I generally like the auto results they produce. I scroll over every inch of my work, enlarged areas to see what I am doing. This is also an advantage of digital painting. I included a close up shot of the work so you can see more of the details. More floral works to come soon. Enjoy all your own summer sunsets and garden beauties!

fantastic photo terry

Artist Reply: Thanks so much, Andrew! I love that I can make a painting into a phot file like this one. One of my favorite things when digital painting s I can save them as a photo file. It sure makes storage of works easy for me.

I do not use my graphics tablet much any more. You have done a wonderful job with this!

Artist Reply: Thanks Stanley! Not use your graphis tablet? I couldn't stand not to now. Some of the art software advances, and effects are stunning now. I can't keep up with it all, nor afford them. Still, I manage with what I have and add when I can. Still haven't gotten into poser type programs yet. Have too much to learn and try with the software I'm using now. I'm using more additional brushes so I get more varied strokes. Yet this work uses some the brushes I first learned to use with my old Painter Classic program. I like the combination it gives, the softness of the brush strokes, and the way I can blend them together. So far, remains my favorits for working with florals and portraits. I will upgrrade later this year to the Painter X, I've the IX.5 now. I liked the upgrades I tried out on the free trail.

Beautiful rich colors. This definitely appears to be your medium.

Artist Reply: Thank you Minnie! It's one that I like and will work more on. I have more works I am mulling over at the moment. WIll be working on a few tomorrow. Sometimes I like to put works to go back to later to see it with fresh eyes. I may have thought of something that will add to it, need to rework, or learned a new skill or technique that would finish it off. This style seems to just "sing" to my self more, if that makes any sense. To think I used to always use pale and light pastel colors in my works. Now I rejoice often in more vivid colors.

William Boyer 26 Jun 2007

Beautiful work, Terry

Artist Reply: Oh, thanks Bert so much for your lovely coments. I always know you mean what you say. I'm still experimenting with styles and colors. More florals to come, but also a bit of variety of other subjects. Much as I love florals, I love a change of subjects and styles. Must not get too comfortable with one thing. I love new challenges and like not playing safe.

Sandra Beraha 26 Jun 2007

Exquisite!

Artist Reply: Thanks Sandra! I was trying to show the beauty and power of it's coors and form. They were so stunning to me when I spotted them. I can't wait to grow some columbine varieties of my own.

Anneke Hut 26 Jun 2007

Such wonderful flowers, the beauty of nature in all its glory.

Artist Reply: Thanks so much Anneke! Exactly what I was seeing and feeling when I spotted these! My husband is amused by my excitement of finding flowers. He's becoming quite a photographer himself now. We are taking scenic trips together now and look forward to many adventures now he's officially retired. He has quite an artistic eye for framing and subjects. I'll have to get him to start his own profolio soon.

Emily Reed 26 Jun 2007

BEAUTIFUL, TERRY, SO GLAD TO SEE YOU BACK.

Artist Reply: Thanks Emily! I'm using my fre time in the lull between contractors on the remodeling of myhome that's going on the market next month. Finally some time to do some paintings! I'll be posting up some floral photos and wildlife from my trips to and from Colorado, New Mexico to where I'm moving in Colorado. Got a new camera and zoom lens to play with. I found May is the month for wildflowers in Colorado. I spent an afternoon in Taos on a trip back to Arizona. My husband thought I'd want to visit the galleries. I amused him by wandering around all the gardens and antique doors store instead.! To beautiful to not take photos of! Will go again for the galleries, as well as stop over in Sante Fe. I want to vist the George O'Keefe museum there. Will post this week some of the new photos I took.

Timothy Hughes 26 Jun 2007

Great work

Artist Reply: Thank you Timothy I make my husband smile when I stop dead in my tracks to admire someone's garden, or find wildflowers. I'm so easily amused by the awesome beauty of flowers and nature. There is such a joy in me when I see such beauty, I love my new camera which is helping save memories of what I see, and proide years of subjects to work on.

Rob Slijkhuis 26 Jun 2007

Great work;I like the overall color balance and technique; good job all the wat :)

Artist Reply: Thanks Rob! I love experimenting with burst of coors, and like to add in touches to make it all work together as a whole. A little bit of fantasy, but closer to what I see in my mind when I look at some subjects.
