Tooley Court alms house Ipswich

This is the gatehouse of a wonderful old building that was originally an alms house; the interior has been fully modernised and is now providing sheltered housing for infirm elderly people; it has beautiful gardens too for the residents to enjoy, naturally the waiting list to become a resident is very long. I do wish that I had ignored the shadow thrown by the building opposite the gate house when painting this, but maybe one day I will re-do it. I have a painting of part of the main garden that can be seen from outside the walls, I will submit this at a later date. All of my work is under copyright.

Artist Reply: Many thanks radfax; this is an intriguing old building, it dates back many centuries; I find it amazing that so many of these very old buildingd still survive, when more modern ones seem to crumble in no time, [sometimes just as well, given a few of the newer monstrosities!]. :) Gwen.

this kind of reminds me of my dads old 2 room school house (he's 87 this year) which has now been converted into a tea shop. he took my son over a few years back and took him to see it. david was in total awe that they actually had schools that small (the one he went to at the time had 3 floors and close to 600 kids). growing up in canada has given him a completely different view of the planet and i like to show him images like this to let him know the varieties of living styles. he went back with me about 3 years back (he was then 14) and he got to see england how I remembered it from being there when i was 6 and 16 for long stretches. it's funny, for allthe many, many years it'd been since i was last there nothing really changes. here, you're gone for a month and a new housing survey has gone in in and they've torn down a couple of buildings and replace them with something else and you've no idea what was there before just that it's different. makes for very little history in comparison with the other side of the pond. oooh, but i do babble on.............. sorry.

Artist Reply: We are very fortunate here in Suffolk, so many of the old buildings do still survive, particularly when they have been put to as good a use as this one. When evacuated from London during part of the war, I attended a village school very much like the one your dad went to: I regret the passing of those small establishments of learning, I believe we gained far more than scholarly knowledge at them, for the teachers knew each child, and behaved almost in loco parentis to them.
