Peace Prayer

On Sept. 11th, 2001, after seeing the devastation of events I, like millions of others, felt compelled to do something. Gathering crystals and candles to me, I placed them in a circle and began singing songs of peace, the words coming without prior knowing. In this small way I "did something"...I prayed peace and healing. It was later it occurred to me to photograph the set up as reminder to pray peace everyday.

Re-membering Ourselves as One

(written in memory of 9-11)

A wall of gray was moving in,

It covered us that day.

People ran and people screamed,

And tried to find a way...

Out of the dust and concrete,

Out of the city's streets.

But all around was darkness

And in panic our hearts beat.

There was no time to comprehend,

Nor was there any way

To understand the happenings

On that mournful day.

We still look back in sadness,

For the loss was very great,

Who knew there'd be such tragedy

Dealt by the hand of fate?

But now we also look ahead

And know this much is true,

Compassion, strength and fearlessness

Will always see us through.

So many people came to help

The friends they'd never known.

Love and sweat mixed with tears

On so many faces shone.

Through all the pain and all the hope

And all the damage done,

A gift was born on that day...

We knew ourselves as One.

Beautiful thought Sallie..... this world could use more prayers of peace and hope. The events of this week leave me wondering more and more about the state of our world, the people in it and our futures. It's sobering, sad and thought evoking. Looking at the collection of objects here, I clearly see the intent toward peace (olive branches?) candles (hope) and strength (energy from the crystals). I sometimes say a silent prayer for the victims' families myself. They are forever the victims of this great loss.

Artist Reply: Thanks Leigh. I agree with you, the world needs hope and positive thoughts/prayers of well being. The world so often seems bleak, but hope springs eternal and keeps us moving forward, striving to make the world a better place in whatever ways we can. The candles are black, yellow, red and white to represent the four directions. The one to the side is purple to symbolize the spirit present in all things and our connectedness to one another. Nope, not olive branches, but holly leaves. :)

To think that you captured a moment that was so monumental to the world with such a beautiful and meaningful ritual. Sallie, I applaud you as a being, as a creature of light, as one of the knowing. May your bread always rise, may you be kissed by the fae, may the graciousness of forever be yours. May all of your fondest dreams come true. Blessings to you as you gather wisdom from the dew. ~Q

Artist Reply: Thank you for the accolades and the most poetic and lovely blessing. I am humbled...and that my friend is truly something! :)
