primitive obscura 1

five years ago I began exploring the use of encaustic or wax surfaces. At the time, I imbedded a host of found items beneath the skin of this velvety surface. The semi translucency provoked the viewer to get very close to the artwork. Some people could not help touching the surface. And that was ok. I used a drill to bore holes throught the wood, then stitched a ragged twyne through. Petraglyphic symbols also found their way into the mix. On a very hot day, part of the wax melted and had to be replaced. The second version was better. The colours seemed richer and deeper.
