Nagatoro's Mysterious Rocks

Here are two detail photographs of the wonderful patterns in the metamorphic rock along the Ara River in Nagatoro. Camera phone photos. Similar compositions were shot on film.

Rocks are wonderful objects to use to create abstract and textured imagery like this excellent piece. The gray tones add to the mystery and allow the viewer to project a multitude of imagery in this unique photo. I have a category just for rocks since their texture, colors and imprints offer me many images within the image, like a Rorschach, the well know projective test where people project their imaginative responses to 10 inblots. I can see so much in this piece and I could look at it for hours. I was immediately struk by the profile of a smiling Gorilla on the bottom right with his eye turned towards the viewer. This is a fabulous piece and I want to take time to look at your portfolio since I do similar work after giving the Rorschach for many years as a Psychologist and having the iconic vision to see imagery before I see the total picture. I use trees, bark, flower and rocks as my primary tools to create my projection catchers. I can see so much in this and if I had it, I would turn it around and on its sides to see a completely different perspective. Great work!!

The rock photos are all very interesting, but this is a favorite-great patterning & layering, fascinating! I'm amazed at how good the phone camera really is but I think your skills & artistic eye are great contributors especially. And we get the chance to travel the world through your photography!

Artist Reply: Thanks, Kathryn. One of the things I love best about outdoor and landscape photography is finding things most people aren't aware of, capturing it on film (or chip in this case) and sharing it with people. Sometimes an unusual landscape is enough to thrill. Other times I need to find an unusual view. These photos here are a little of both.

Splendid abstract art from nature.

You have the most AWESOME pictures ever, Peter!

Artist Reply: Thank you, Olga. My talents are not as varied as yours so I have to try my best with what I can do.

ooooh....abstract rocks. You know...kind of. really cool textures and patterns here. You said previously that it takes some work to get an effectivce composition. I can definitely believe that but finding 'effective' (some of us term them "awesome") compositions is one of your strengths as a photographer. These are great. They look like rock but they also look like wood...and ice...and flowing water. All at the same time. :D

Artist Reply: Do I know you? Yes, I think I know you. Just remember, I started the trend of commenting anonymously. :P But thank you so much for your comments. I am pleased to read that I have strengths as a photographer. The rocks are extremely fascinating but just pointing the camera and shooting anything only shows how the rocks look. Finding the right composition combines the natural beauty of the subject with a humanly conceived vision of natural art. Hmm... That's a good point. I think I can use that in an article I am writing.

Marvellous photographs

Artist Reply: The rocks themselves are marvelous. It does take a bit of work to get an effective composition, however. Thanks for your comment, Thea.

Beautiful. Good camera phone. Nice images.

Artist Reply: I bought the phone that had the most expensive camera. That way I didn't need to buy a camera as well. :D
