Michelle, now that I look at it more, I don't think the background should be black...that blue is just too gorgeous. Maybe the small sunflower, instead of getting rid of it, you could tone it down just a bit so it won't be in 'competition' with the larger bloom for attention. You could do just a bit of grey wash over it to dull it. Then maybe add some depth into the whole piece by darkening the area behind the leaves. It will make the large sunflower pop out even more, I think.
Artist Reply: Thanks Darla, I think I am going to clean up the petals a little on the small one and then do a wash over it like you said. Also, the color is a little different in the picture than in person. I should have taken it outside to photograph. It is my favorite painting so far.
