Wildflower From Globe, Arizona

Today I went on a lovely drive with my husband. We went on a scenic drive and wildflower hunting. I spotted a few of these fist sized wild flowers on the side of the road. I included a zoomed photo of the ragged, past it's prime flower that I used as a reference for this painting. I started with a blank canvas, using my wacom tablet and pen. I used Painter IX software to do this painting. Not a manipulated photo, I did every stroke on my own. I used less blending than I usually do, as I wanted the chalks to show more for this painting. I used Chalks, airbrush paints, some blending, and a little pastels for this work. This is my version of of the wildflower. You will see that I did some varation of the natural colors, the leaves are not exactly like the flowers (the wierd, thin, scrawny leaves are not the same), as well as background. I hope you like it. I saw the beauty in the weed, while others will pass on by and not see, but a weed.

Superb arrangement, texture, colors and style!

Artist Reply: Thanks Jerry! I saw the wildflower's beaty and all the hardship it struggled to grow out in the desert just made it more beautiful to me.

How Divine, How like the Creator you are, seeing beauty in the things that others would not...giving love and care to a wayside weed...ignored and abandoned, you gave it grace...How like the Savior you are...Truly a labor of love...Excellent work...it looks like a pure white poppy...I would have never known unless you told me and I saw the phto...Incredibly like Heaven.

Artist Reply: Thanks Christine! I don't need to have something perfect to see beauty of things, and have always looked past the flaws. I hope others can do it as well. I stopped to take the refference photo, I didn't notice how battered the flower was. I already knew how I wanted to paint it.

I really love the effect you chose for the photo.

Artist Reply: Thank you Tazda! I do love making new paintings from photos that I take. I used a split screen as I work so as to get the size accuracte as I sketch out each part. Too easy if I traced it, more challenging for me to do it by eyeballing it. Makes me more pleased in the end to do so. This time I used more chalks than air brush spraying the colors. I also used less blending tools for this one. I did lots of light layers of colors to build them up. Glad you liked this one!

Exquisite! You've improved on nature....

Artist Reply: Thank you Sara. I just wanted to pay homage for it's beauty.

you did a fine job of bringing this to life, excellent artwork!!!

Artist Reply: Thank you so much Peter! I took 3 hours when we got home to paint this one. The seed pods and leaves are so odd and different colors that they don't seem to be from the same plant. I finally decided how I wanted them to look, and by that point just wanted to focus on playing up the colors to center on the blossom. Not as accurate as it should be in detail and scale, but I'm pleased with the results. I get to picky with my works sometimes, and have to stop fussing if I draw a petal a bit off scale. Usually, I won't post the reference photo if I do a painting because of that. So, I'm getting braver now to put them up. So many have asked me to in e-mails. This is now my mind develops a painting and expresses the emotions it gives me. Thanks for being a fan!

Terry, exquistie work, and coming from a background of that manipulation of florals, you have this so perfect, I am very impressed. miguel

Artist Reply: Thank yo Michael! I learned to manipulate after I learn to paint them. I do so much backwards. It also makes it harder for me to even try to manipulate the florals when I work on those designs. I fltl like I'm cheating. I'm glad now I can do both types of works, and even a combination if I want. I may see if I can do a manipulation of this painting and post it if I can get a nice result. This painting has some pretty colors that I could work with. Darn it! I've got some chores to do, and you got me off on a bunch of new ideas to try! LOL! Glad you liked the painting. I'll work later on a floral manipulation from it.

Wow Terry, simply gorgeous - great eye for what will translate well - beautiful piece.

Artist Reply: Thank you Joseph! I love that there can be so much beauty in nature, and it's out there to see. One just needs to stop ad take time to see it, not just to smell the roses. Look and see the wildflowers as well. In the desert area I live in, if you really look around, some of the tinest little blossoms can be amazing in their beauty. You just don't notice them due to size. Will be posing photos and paintings of many of them.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh terry OUTSTANDING and u know it.....u do such a great work...wow...

Artist Reply: Thank you Bianca! You got a good example of how my artist eye sees and creates with this one. I can always "see" what I will do for the flower, but have to work on the rest to go with it. I have more trouble decideing on leaves and background work. The blossom is the easy part for me.

Anne Vis 07 May 2006

Lovely, Terry, I like what you did with the original photograph!

Artist Reply: Thanks Anne! I love going on photo hunts. Never know what will be found. My husband had to pull over and back track to find a spot to park. I was so excited about finding these flowers. On the way home we stopped in a little town to eat and I kept seeing them! So funny!

corry stuart 07 May 2006

Terry you know I am your fan when it comes to PainterIX and I think this flower is absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!!

Artist Reply: Thanks Corry! Maybe I should get Corel to sponsor me! LOL! I seriously need to set up a cafepress.com store soon. Will have the time in 3 weeks when school let's out for the summer break. I can model my own floral t-shirts and hummingbirds all summer.

Joke Schotting 07 May 2006

Wonderful work,Terry!!!!!TOP

Artist Reply: Thanks so much Joke! This one shows a bit more of how my artisitic brain goes to work to go from point a to point b. Background soes matter, and adds so much to the subject.

Loredana 07 May 2006

Stunning work terry Love it :)

Artist Reply: Thank you Lordana! I chose colors to reflect the feelings of my day and warm memories I will have of dragging my willing husbad around to take photos. I collect more rocks than took photos. This time, we got old discarded core samples from mines to donate to the science teacher at the school I work at. I also use them to border my garden.

Timothy Hughes 07 May 2006

Nice work Terry!

Artist Reply: Thank you Timothy! Such beauty should not be passed by, even when past their peak in life. They are still beautiful. I can see it, and so do you and others.

Emily Reed 07 May 2006

Beautiful, Terry! So fine and rare a flower!

Artist Reply: Thank you Emily! Wildflowers are such treasures to find!

Pat Abbott 07 May 2006

Beautiful warm color and light.

Artist Reply: Thanks Pat! I thought for all the trouble this flower had to go through to bloom in the desert, it should be appreciated for it's beauty.

Nira Dabush 07 May 2006

Splendid image wonderful effects added

Artist Reply: Thank you for your comments on my work, Nira! This plant had odd seed pods that were totally different than the leaf colors. The blossoms were large and lovely. It had a light scent, and many insects were landing on them often.
