With/Without

"With/Without"--(and a wobble of wine)... "whoops, Wendy... nah, it's okay--I got ya." ****************************** Watching and wondering... what it is that distinguishes me from them: they're in love, together, being "with"....and I, not in love (without), only intoxicated by sunlight... © 1999, Michael Cook. (Private Collection) and wondering...

Oh, I haven't seen this before, Michael! What a wonderful surprise!! This is anther different style of your for me to see. Great architectural detail contrasting with the figures and shadows. Love the blazing reflection and looonnnggg shadows. The details are superb!

Extraordinary work. I know the city very well and you have captured it brilliantly with New York icons and nuance. The garbage scenes lend reality to the scence as does the reflecting light, so many great details that bring vitality to one of the most exciting cities in the world where I feel literally thrown into humanity. Great human statement with the lovers and a well paired narrative that I always appreciate. Exceptional work!!

Artist Reply: Thanks so much, Julie. I try to create "atmospheric" effects in the urban scenes (not necessarily having to do with the atmosphere, but the sense of place. I'm glad you feel this one succeeded. Yep, we're "literally thrown into humantiy" here in NYC. Can't escape that!

A beautiful moment captured in time. The detailed reflections and distorded starburst of light on the cars are well rendered. I love the shine of it all, in stark contrast with the pile of garbage on the side of the road.

Artist Reply: Thanks, Tracey. I was originally attracted to the mirror-surface reflections in the foreground (which figure prominently as subject matter in my photos), but when that couple walked by, into the sunlight, I had to record this scene. The garbage piles were interesting because as I started to paint them, I thought, "Oh, I've never rendered garbage bags before. I can't do that!" But as I proceeded, it worked out fine; they turned out to be one of the easiest elements here.

most often the artist sees what others have too busy trying to capture it for posterity while life moves right by... but you know what? it's equally rewarding.. this is excellent illustrative work..
