Empty Cup Principle

Drew this in 1984. I was sitting on the back porch of my parents house in NY, holding a cup of tea in my hand. Kind of as close to a "self portrait" as i have gotten so far... had just graduated from college and knew I would be returning soon to Japan... I call this the empty cup principle cause it reminds me of the Taoist & Zen idea that we must empty ourselves of our preconceptions, knowledge and thoughts before we can learn something new... Something also very important with meditation...

This is a beautiful description and I can see your reflective nature in this wonderful drawing! You have taken great care, yet the lines are sure and strong! I especially am drawn to the patterning in the sleeves and clouds in this image.
