I wanted to paint a bunch of tulips as if they were held in the hand. This piece took me over a week. I don't know if I chose the right background color to show them off. But I'm finally satisfied with the final result. It's not like I can go back and start over! This piece is 18 x 28

I think it is an excellent work. the background you used adds a lot of depth. I'm wondering about the highlights... do you manage to add them to base colours? my oil pastels (expecially white) somehow refuse to stick on the colour beneath.Anonymous Guest 08 Feb 2006

You handle the oil pastels with such skill and delicacy. the shape and softness of the tulips is very lovely. corrections are a challenge in oil pastels, but not impossible. Use a gum eraser lightly dipped(but not dripping!) in turpentine to gently lift some pigment. Then lightly coat the area to be removed with turpentine. let it soak a bit. then, gingerly scrap off with the dull edge of a palette knife or even a scapel, careful not to press the pigment into the paper or scratch off the surface of the paper. I've gone so far as to resort to thin 1 or 2 washes of white acrylic paint to cover the stained area of the paper when all of the colour can't be removed. Then, begin again with the correct colours or design. Practice this first, before trying it on a "final" piece.Rhonda Shereck 01 Feb 2006
