In the spirit of Frida Kahlo I did this self-portrait of a very dark and disturbing time in my life. The inner child cowers in the shadows while light is cast on the hallucination of gore. I went with a child-like background to symbolize innocence of spirit even while the mind is in anguish. The stone figures above reflect the saying that we heard so often in childhood: see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. In this case I think it represents denial, the need in our society to avoid such ugliness as insanity.
