Introduced in 1967, the design process for the Mercury Cougar had actually begun 14 months prior to the introduction of Ford's Mustang. Intended to fill the gap between the Mustang and the T-Bird its smooth sculptured styling and trend-setting attributes motivated "Motor Trend" magazine to name it their car of the year. The upscale XR-7 performance model was added to the line in mid season.
