The Fishing Cone, West Thumb Geyser area of Yellowstone Lake . Mountain man lore told of a geyser on the shore of a high alpine lake where one could catch a trout, swing the pole around dip it into the boiling pool, and cook that fish without taking it off the line. This cooking on the hook feat at Fishing Cone became famous after it was described by a member of the Washburn Expedition in 1870. A national magazine reported in 1903 that no visit to the park was complete without this experience; tourists often dressed in a cooks hat and apron to have their pictures taken at the "Chowder Pot" or the "Fish Pot" Fishing is no longer allowed from Fishing Cone ,one to protect the fragile area around it and because of the injuries that occurred to the excited, distracted anglers while straddling this kettle of boiling water. The Cone is often covered by lake water, but when exposed, the temperature of the water in the cone averages about 200 degrees F. ( 94 C ) (The boiling point at this elevation is 199 degrees F. Fishing Cone is a geyser but it has been years since it has erupted.
