Orchid.

The Cowhorn Orchid. This is a state listed endagered species. They are sometimes called the Bee Swarm or Cigar orchid. From a distance it does look a swarm of bees. In the early part of the 20th century collectors ravaged this beautiful orchid for it beauty and because it contains a chemical that was used for book bindings. I have located a few plants growing in a Cypress dome in the Everglades. It is pretty fun taking people swamp tromping off trail to see. They bloom in March through April. The only problem with going to see it is snakes. We have encountered up to 7 water moccasins on the way to view this. And there is a pretty big gator hole in the middle of the dome. The gator does not like to be seen, but her babies are all over the place.
