Oh, my. I'm reaching for my billfold! I'm wondering if I could take a year off, or even some, to work toward alleviating, nay, toward ending such waste of human life. Beside the emotion (I wonder how long it takes most of us to get "beside it?" Or around it. How many back away. Turn and go another direction?) And of course, this child, and the millions of others are the seeds of terrorism now menacing the whole world! But I was saying, find and tell me what isn't perfect here in this painting. What does not add to its stunning effectiveness? Start with the fabulous texture and creases in the "garment," maybe two-thirds of the entire painting! And then try to tell me that any part of the face does not contribute, not only to the desperation, but also to the beauty of this young boy or girl. To only the hardest of hearts, I think, does it matter to what country, what religion this child, and millions more, belongs. And if this painting doesn't portray such need, does not awaken our pity, our concerns, enough eventually to try our best to assist in any way we can to erradicate forever such poverty and suffering at the roots of its beginning, the beginning of the widening pathway to terrorism! Thank you so very very much for this, Anneke, and may God bless you and your continued wonderful creative work, and also bless especially all the children of the world! I so admire your dedicating your profit from your art to the world's children through UNICEF. Thank you again. Peace, etc. Bruce

Artist Reply: Wouldn't it be wonderful if all artists of this world could really solve the problems of these children? To think of that we, by just doing what we love to do, could feed them or help them otherwise, it would be great! Bruce, I know you do lots to make this world a better place, if you ever meet an organisation that could use my work, please tell them they are free to do so. I'm really happy with your sweet words, many thanks! May God bless you and your good works also!

Henrique Serra 04 Jul 2009

This picture in fasciating me extremely. It is different and therefore one cannot stop looking at it.

Artist Reply: I had it hanging on the wall and had the same experience as you had, Hedda. I think it's the eyes that do it. I gave it away to someone who liked it very much. I've never seen it again. Thank you for visiting my gallery, your words are very much appreciated!

Thom Roslan 27 Oct 2008

Beautifully captured Anneke.....Great pathos and the colors are perfect for it. Please put this up for your Art of the Day column....... Say it's from me if you feel it's not right of you to put up your own image. PLEASE !

Artist Reply: Dear Thom, that's really a sweet thought of you, but I can't do it, firstly because I only post new artworks of today in the topic and secondly I will never put up my own pictures there. Nevertheless I feel honoured by your comment for which I thank you very much! :D

This is really powerful Anneke, the eyes stare right though you, it almost makes you feel uncomfortable. This piece should be a reminder to us all, that we are so much luckier than most in this world and we should not take it for granted. truly powerful my friend

Artist Reply: Gavin, I had it hanging on the wall, but had to take it off. It was too confronting to see the eyes. It made me feel guilty, we are living in such luxury. Thank you for your wonderful words!
