**Honu — A Portrait in the Sand** Resting on a Maui beach, a Hawaiian green sea turtle, known locally as honu, offers a remarkable close-up view of its beautifully patterned face and weathered shell. Fine grains of sand cling to the turtle's mouth and chin, while the intricate markings surrounding its eyes reveal details that are easily overlooked from a distance. Hawaiian green sea turtles are among the most recognizable marine animals in the islands. Although they spend much of their lives in the ocean, they are also known to come ashore to rest and bask in the warmth of the Hawaiian sun. What I enjoy most about this photograph is its character.
