The F4U Corsair was designed to meet a 1938 U.S. Navy requirement for a high-performance carrier fighter. Its Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine & massive 13 foot 4-inch propeller would give it an inverted “gull wing design” to accommodate this large propeller without having to enlarge the landing gear. This became the aircraft’s signature feature ...but its speed was what enemy pilots remembered.
