the vet

A monochrome piece in acrylic, the veteran was originally captured on film by Critsiane Dieter Hinrichs. What struck me was the intensity of the child staring at the man. It reminded me of the attention my mother attracted after a brain tumor disfugured her face. It seems like those who are different make us uncomfortable because we don't know how to properly react. Our curiosity is natural, yet we're taught not to stare, not to ask questions. It's an instilled conflict that further alienates people who are out of the norm in some way. This isn't meant as any moral judgement, I just wanted to capture this social dilemma that can turn a hero into a guilty stare.
