The "442" name (Four-Four-Two) came from the original car's 4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed manual transmission & dual (2) exhausts. American option models were F-85 or Cutlass, but 442 became a model in its own right from 1968 to 1971. 1971 also saw lower engine compression ratios affecting all GM engines. It was a new corporate policy to run on lower octane regular & low lead or unleaded gasoline -- to prepare for future catalytic converters on 1975-models.
