A “Trans Am” was the top-of-the-line Firebird. The 1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am became Pontiac's premier performance offering by eclipsing the GTO, but performance demands were about to bottom out among cars of the “muscle car” age. Only Trans Am would survive the coming dark ages of the late 1970s & 1980s.
