Artist Reply: Artist Reply: Hi Brenda, I believe you would be right about the leucistic coloring on the squirrels. They are not albino as they have normal colored eyes. I just use the title white for them as it sounds better than leucistic but they definitely are a hybrid off from the brown ground squirrels. I had a newspaper contact me as they were doing a story about them at the Dana Point Harbor and wanted some photos as I had documented them rather well over a course of three years. Most of these have been eradicated now from the harbor. The last time I was down there I only saw a couple of them. I was fortunate to get a lot of interesting poses and images of them while they were there. Artist Reply: Late reply but you were right it is a Leucistic Squirrel. most people don't know that, It took me a bit to finally find out what it was as I knew it was not albino as it has brown vs pink eyes. but at the time there was not a lot known of this coloration , now it is a bit easier to find this out, but there is still not a lot of photos of this type of ground squirrel. probably most shots found on google would be snatched copies of my shots. though I found a video of someone who had taken photos of the area I photograph them at.
