MZABALAZO

MZABALAZO is a IsiZulu/Xhosa word = STRUGGLE in English. The word Mzabalazo is also used to describe an unplanned (but planned by the people; out of necessity) settlement on land which has not been serveyed or proclaimed as residential; In South Africa these settlements are found in variety of areas and are home to a large percentage of the country's improverished population. This painting is dedicated to all the people of Umzabalazo in South Africa and beyond, since I personally know how it's like to be in the situation they in. Wabi Sabi: "seeing the beauty in imperfection" Even though it's stressful and saddening I feel like there's beauty in the Struggle (Mzabalazo). This painting is also social commentary on the land issue we have in South Africa!
