Great blue herons nearly always take flight quickly when approached. This one stayed on the road long enough for a few shots through the windshield. Hagerman NWR, Sherman, Texas

Oh!!!! What a great moment you caught :) great shot!

After a while they get used to small amounts of traffic. This is a rare photo as these birds prefer keeping their feet wet. I've seen them up to their thighs in rivers and just getting their toes wet at the edge of a pond but never standing out of the water.
