Al's Spitfire

A depiction of Wing Commander Al Deere’s Supermarine Spitfire Mk LFIXc (EN568 ).From June 1943, he led the Biggin Hill Wing (in EN568 ) and added four more kills to his eighteen confirmed victories. Probably the most famous fighter aircraft of all time, the Spitfire, elegant, streamlined and deadly reigned supreme. The Spitfire Mk.IX is often considered the most attractive version of this most attractive fighter. The Mk.IX was essentially an improvisation, to combat the new Fw 190A and it proved to be more than a match for the ’Butcher Bird ’ and though designed as a stop gap over 5,000 were eventually produced. As a Wing Commander Deere had a right to paint individual code letters on his personal aircraft. His command role was symbolized by the pennant on the fuselage. The serial number on his plane was partially over painted on both sides of the tail.
