American lotus, Nelumbo lutea, provides shelter and food for various wildlife. These are newly established in one of the marshes at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge in Sherman, Texas.

They remind me of water lilies. The exception is the lily will root itself in up to eight feet of water. Lilies are found around lakes and ponds. Marshes tend to be shallower but stay damp even when dry.
