Artist comment: "In this pastel painting on Canson Mi-Teintes paper, I wanted to capture the activity of the ever present seagulls. Can you almost hear the raucous call of the young one as the others concentrate on looking for food? I sketched the composition as I saw it, with boats at peaceful rest in the early morning sunshine. The gulls were just a few of the many who were looking for breakfast. With soft pastel, I painted the water, walkway, and grasses. The boats were next with their ripply reflections (the red stripe is an interesting counterpoint to all the cool colors). Finally, I did the gulls with all the rich sunlight and shadows with reflected light on their bellies."
