MIDNIGHT FORTUNE

This was inspired by an old vintage Halloween card. I did my own interpretation of the scene and this is the end result. The title, Midnight Fortune, indicates that at the stroke of midnight, when one goes into a garden where beets grow, pulls out one--and depending on the size one pulls out at the stroke of midnight (fat beet means good fortune; skinny beet means a so-so fortune). Now, I don't know why the olden days decided on a beet, but then again, Halloween or All Hallow's Eve was celebrated in the Old World with carved out turnips, beets and the like lighted by inserting small candles inside. Pumpkins were a New World discovery--hence the prevalence of pumpkin Jack-O-Lanterns in the U.S. during Halloween. My version shows a lovely witch pulling a huge round beet from her garden--insuring good fortune for her in the coming year! A trio of winged garden goblins look on while a small chubby owl peeps out of her home in a gnarled oak tree.
