Artist Reply: Thank you for your comment, Sigga. These pods open up in late Fall and are only good for photos for a short time before the fluffy seeds blow away. The fluff was used to stuff life jackets during WWII.

Artist Reply: THE FLUFFY PART IS CALLED KAPOK. DURING WWII I WAS IN THE BOY SCOUTS AND WE COLLECTED THESE TOBE STUFFED INTO LIFE JACKETS AS A FLOATATION MATERIAL.
