The ending scene from the story of Apollo and Daphne. Stung by Apollo's derision, Eros planned revenge. He encouraged Apollo to pursue the man-hating Daphne, which the vain Apollo readily accepted. However, Eros ensured a mismatch by shooting Apollo with a golden arrow evoking love, and Daphne with a leaden arrow causing revulsion. The girl fled from the desperate Apollo, up until she was cornered, whereupon she prayed to her father, Peneus the river god, to save her from her horrifying peril. Peneus, devoid of choice, turned her into a laurel tree. Mortified and heartbroken, Apollo took a twig from the laurel tree and wore it as a wreath to remind him of Daphne. Eros' revenge was thus complete.
