In the center of piazza Flavio Gioia in Amalfi, Italy, stands a statue of Flavio Gioia, who is believed to have invented the compass for maritime use. The statue dates from 1892 and is the work of Alfonso Balzico, a sculptor from Cava de’ Tirreni near Salerno. (NileGuide 2011) The photo was taken on September 17, 2011.
